Summary:Knowledge of other languages and cultures is crucial to Australia's effective participation in a globalised world. However, over recent decades, the teaching and learning of languages other than English (LOTE) in Australian universities has been the subject of growing alarm. The situation is frequently described as a 'crisis'. This is the final report from a project that promoted a stronger languages culture in higher education in Australia, by building strategic leadership across disciplines and institutions through a tertiary languages network. The network systematised sharing of good practice, and helped break down the silo structures that, in many instances, inhibit students' abilities to take up and follow through with LOTE study. Based on recent detailed research, and drawing on the leadership qualities manifest in the dedication, proficiency and inventiveness of languages teachers across the nation, the project created an enduring structure through which successes can be more readily disseminated throughout the sector.
