| Summary: | HEADS-UP (Higher Educators Advancing Disability Standards - Universities online Project) was a collaborative initiative which aimed to assist staff in Australian universities to meet their obligations regarding the Disability Standards for Education (DSE, 2005) under the Disability Discrimination Act (!992). To achieve its purpose, the project created an online interactive training resource which outlines the processes that universities must follow in order to enable students with disability to participate on the same basis (with comparable opportunities and choices) as other students. The project team members consisted of the University of Canberra (lead institution); Australian National University; Australian Human Rights Commission; and Australian Association of Special Education. The e-learning resource consists of eight lessons (three foundation lessons and one for each Standard - enrolment; participation; curriculum development, accreditation and delivery; student support services; and harassment and victimisation). These are freely available as a series of downloadable SCORM packages, enabling universities to customise the training to their own contexts and embed it in their Learning Management and Human Resources systems. The foundation lessons were trialled at two universities. Training was associated with increased knowledge and confidence in implementing the Standards. The project team recommended that similar resources be developed for other education sectors. This document is the final report from the project. |
