Sammanfattning:Some issues and topics appropriate for undergraduate study, and increasingly in postgraduate study, are simply too complex to be properly investigated within a single, traditionally defined discipline. Relatively broad fields of inquiry such as medicine, informatics, business, engineering, and the built environment routinely draw upon multiple disciplines to develop learning and teaching outputs required to produce employable graduates. These are graduates who are not only competent in a single field but who also understand the underlying process of problem definition, data analysis, critical thinking, evidence-based problem-solving, communication, and ethics. Face-to-face interviews, forums, and workshops with expert educators allowed the development of a baseline level of understanding of existing and evolving practices in pluridisciplinary curriculum development and teaching philosophy. Analysis of the results led to the development of a conceptual framework with embedded cross-discipline consilience and project-based learning as an initial step for the development of an integrated system for students engaged in pluridisciplinary programs. Further, a set of tools for the assessment and development of pluridisciplinary fields of study were developed for educators and institutions to ensure access to the range of learning and teaching practices in use and to promote continual improvement in these rapidly evolving fields.
