| Summary: | Final report from a project that established a national higher education curriculum for entomology. The Entomology Curriculum Australia (ECA) was established to coordinate the development of four subjects that provide a specialisation in entomology. Cross-institutional enrolment allows students already enrolled in a degree to enroll in ECA subjects offered at another institution. Students not currently participating in a degree program can enroll in non-award mode. Subject resources were developed based on a framework that included the participation of entomologists and other experts, peer-review of subject resources, extensive use of media-rich websites and provision of 'how to' video tutorials. To help disseminate the availability of the subjects, the group established a brand, the ECA, that was to feature in all dissemination activities. A dedicated website, www.entomology.edu.au, was launched to provide information to potential students about the content of the subjects, their delivery mode and how to enrol. The subjects attract a mix of cross-institutional and local enrolments. Internal students take the subjects because they are of interest and broaden career options. Others take the subjects because they specifically wish to learn more entomology for career or professional development purposes. Whichever pathway of entry, we conclude that the ECA subjects can meet the goal of providing educational opportunities for students wishing to specialize further in entomology. |
