| Sumari: | Final report from a project that addressed ongoing concerns about the discrepancy between engineering students' communication skills and those identified as necessary by Government and professional bodies. Surveys show that written communication skills are critical for engineering graduates. However, many engineering students find writing difficult and consider it a low priority and this attitude is often reinforced within curricula where many lecturers find teaching writing challenging, especially when faced with a diverse student cohort. The OWC provides a comprehensive and systematic approach to the development of student writing in engineering over the undergraduate years through the deployment of innovative technologies. Key genres from first to honours year are made explicit to students in online support materials. In addition, the eLearning tools in the OWC support the writing process through peer feedback and scaffolding and enable students to customise their writing via a semi-automated diagnostic tool. In this way, the OWC also supports lecturers through the whole curriculum process. |
