It achieved each of its intended outcomes, namely: (1) to address the increasing diversity in engineering students prior learning, learning styles, abilities and other factors; (2) to provide a practical approach to tailoring education to satisfy diverse student learning needs without increasing the burden on teaching staff; (3) to compile a directory of publicly available learning resources for engineering mechanics, and a guide to their applications (a 'toolbox'); (4) to evaluate of the 'toolbox' through ongoing use by the project team; and (5) to put in place a process for increasing quality of learning overall by addressing specific student needs. The result of this work is a holistic overview of issues surrounding engineering mechanics education, and an online directory of engineering mechanics learning resource, www.learnmechanics.org. Ongoing research into students' use of this online resource suggests that providing access to a wide range of learning resources may be an effective way of supporting students at risk of failing mechanics. |
