Gaia:Final report from a project that aimed to develop early childhood teacher education students' (ECTES) professional capacities as effective teachers of science, through a collaborative approach between teacher educators and science/engineering academics. A practical action research methodology guided the project, involving iterative cycles of science module development, implementation and evaluation. Five science modules were developed on the environment, day and night, forensic science, cleanliness and solar energy. These modules were then team taught in a science education unit. Across the unit, the ECTES developed greater confidence to teach science, better attitudes towards science, and enhanced science content knowledge. Reasons attributed to these increases included: being shown how to teach science, active participation within the workshops, access to the modules and science/engineering academics, and increased science content knowledge. The modules assisted the ECTES to teach science in the classroom in a flexible, integrated and engaging manner. A model of institutional interdisciplinary collaboration, based on the theoretical concepts of social capital, structural holes and social brokers, was developed. This model highlighted the importance of institutional strategic support, team selection, a mechanism to shift perspective, and characteristics of the social broker (passion, vision, wisdom, legitimate authority, nurturing capacity, flexible/emergent role, and active for the entire project).
