| Sumario: | A sense of belonging/connection is pivotal to reducing attrition and improving learning outcomes for distance students who embody diverse needs and attributes. Although a myriad of programs designed to promote and enhance students' sense of institutional connection exist, their success has been inadequately investigated beyond the first year. Hence, the impact technological innovations may have on perceived social belonging/ isolation, academic performance or degree completion across an institution remains unknown. As a national leader in technological innovation and distance delivery, Charles Sturt University is well placed to examine not only the impact of specific programs designed to enhance student belonging, but moreover how institution-wide change in learning technologies and policies affects practice. These insights will contribute to international research on the complex relationship among student diversity, social belonging/isolation, and attrition/completion. Findings will be contextualised within broader socio-cultural and technical environments to reveal how contemporary trends are historically shaped to concretely inform sector-wide change. |
